The Two Fluid Ounces

Like the gallon, the fluid ounce comes in two sizes:

• US fluid ounce: 1 fl oz = 29.5735296 ml (exact). Used in the US for cooking, beverages, and consumer packaging.
• UK (Imperial) fluid ounce: 1 fl oz = 28.4130625 ml (exact). Used in the UK and a few other Commonwealth contexts. The Imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller, which is why 113 ml comes out as more Imperial fluid ounces than US.

This is the opposite of the gallon situation, where the Imperial unit is larger. The reason is historical: the two systems chose different reference volumes for their base units in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Why 113 ml Specifically?

113 ml is not arbitrary — it shows up in a handful of regulated and commercial contexts:

• Cosmetics and toiletries. 113 g (which corresponds closely to 113 ml for water-density products) is a common labeled size for soaps, lotions, and shaving products in countries that mark them in grams.

113 ml in Other Volume Units

Worth highlighting: 1 ml = 1 cm³ exactly. So 113 ml is also exactly 113 cubic centimeters. This identity is useful when you need to switch between fluid and dimensional measurements.

Recipe Substitution: 113 ml ≈ 1/2 Cup?

A US cup is 240 ml, so 113 ml is 113/240 ≈ 47% of a US cup — slightly less than half. If a recipe calls for 1/2 cup (120 ml), 113 ml is close enough for most home cooking.

• Confusing fluid ounces with weight ounces. A fluid ounce is a unit of volume; a weight ounce is a unit of mass. They coincide numerically only for water at room temperature, and even then approximately. Always check whether a label says "fl oz" or just "oz".
• Treating 113 ml as exactly 4 oz. 113 ml is close to 4 UK fl oz but only about 3.82 US fl oz. The exact value depends on the system.
• Using the rule of thumb "30 ml per fl oz" without thinking. This is a US approximation. For Imperial fluid ounces, the multiplier is closer to 28.4. Either way, 113 ml ÷ 30 = 3.77 — close but not exact.
